Adopt a donkey: Mr. Crusty
Mr Crusty is a 15-year-old gelding (male) donkey standing at 10.1 hands. He was bought from a horse dealer in 1995 at a New Forest pony sale
before being entered in the sale ring. In common with many rescued donkeys he was in a very poor condition. On arrival at the Sanctuary he was treated for a skin complaint, his hooves were trimmed and he was put on a course of wormer. After careful feeding and much care and attention, Mr Crusty is now a very fit and healthy donkey with a very good nature. He is also a very quick learner.
Mr Crusty shares a stable with his friend Monty – Monty seems intent on setting up a great escape for them by gnawing down their stable door which has had to be reinforced against strong donkey teeth! We take Mr Crusty and some of the other rescued donkeys to country shows and steam fairs to raise funds for the Sanctuary and promote both the rescue work we do and the riding for the disabled. Mr Crusty enjoys meeting different people, as he always loves a bit of fuss and attention.
Mr Crusty was given his unusual name in honour of a local bakery that donates some of their waste bread, which we mince up and add to the donkeys’ feed. As Mr Crusty (the donkey) arrived soon after Mr Crusty (the bakery) opened, someone suggested the name and it stuck!
